WELCOME to Mercy's 7th Grade

Chromebooks in Action!!

Welcome to the Adventure of Mercy's 7th grade!

I will be your tour guide as we navigate through this year of discovery and growth. I am eagerly looking forward to a new year of faith, learning and adventure!

The seventh graders will be given many opportunities to grow both as students and members of the Mercy community.  I will be using this blog during the year in an effort to relay class information and provide a window to the our experiences. Our Theme for this school year is again centered around values exhibited by Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati as expressed by being " Faithful, Trustfworthy, Respectful, Responsible & Caring", our school's 5 PILLARS. Any visitors to our school community will see the 5 PILLARS of our philosphy incorporated into our daily routine and expressed in numerous ways throughout the school, all year long. I cannot think of a more appropriate theme as we continue our journey of discovery, growth, and faith.

Signing in to the PLUSPORTALS website with your username and password will allow access to daily homework assignments and other information pertinent to you student. PLEASE contact Mrs. Joanne Thomas (JThomas@olom.org) if you are missing your login information or it is not functioning.

Checking the 7th Grade Homeroom web site on the School website (schoololom.org) does NOT require a password for the 7th grade supply list, schedule and other class-related information. Students should have their supplies and supply fee paid before the end of the first week of school. Class-related information such as field trips and special events will be found on this page. It also includes links (Science 7 ) to all science notes, work-sheets, labs and science assignments.

The opening week of school will see the new seventh graders beginning the year by learning how to use a lock and locker and getting to know their classmates, teachers, and the new schedule.  A secured locker will be used to store books, and each will have access to a second locker for their lunches and coats.

Please be aware that the lockers are small and narrow (8.25 inches wide) if your student plans on buying locker accessories.

CHROMEBOOKS

Mercy will again be supporting a Chrome-based environment, and each 7th grade student will have daily access to their individual Chromebook in school.  Although they cannot be taken home, all work done on the Chromebooks during class will be accessible on home computers with internet access and most tablets. Chromebook training will be the first week of school.

Back to School Night  be on September 12th at 6:45 pm in the the Kennedy Room beginning with an initial session that will provide an introduction to the upcoming school year from the administration and school support organizations, followed by general summaries from each of the middle school teachers. These will provide an overview to upcoming school year as well as specific information on the curriculum and policies for each of the middle school classes. We Hope to See You There!

The 7th grade students will take part in a THREE DAY (two night) over-night outdoor education  experience at Echo Hill Camp in Worton, Md. September 10th through 12th. It will be a truely unique experience designed to provide explore the wonders of the Cheaspeake Bay on-board historic bay craft while emphasizing teamwork and community-building in a natural setting. The experience is scheduled to include an overnight aboard one of the bay craft.

High School Visits:

Along with the eighth graders, the seventh graders will be attending a series of high school presentations by representatives from several local Catholic high schools during regular school hours.   These will provide insights to the programs and opportunities each has to offer. Those visiting in September include Good Counsel, Stone Ridge, Georgetown Prep, and St. John's College High School.

The Safety Patrols will begin their monthly meetings with Montgomery County Police Officer Guilday in September, and will continue to work daily shifts at afternoon carpool. Many signed up last year, but new patrols are still needed.  Besides providing a great service to the school, the AAA and Montgomery County Police Department provide numerous "perks" over the course of the year, and an enjoyable "patrol picnic" in May. Please have your child consider this opportunity for school service if he/she has not already signed up.

Seventh graders will again work as peer mentors with our kindergartners and other students on a rotating, weekly basis during the school day. This constructive activity has its focus on service and community. This will be just one of several class and/or school-wide service projects focused on community during the course of this school year.

7th grade science this year will focus on the physical world, and will include numerous labs and quarterly projects.  Hands-on experiences, demonstrations, videos, and computer simulations will expand on the concepts presented in the science textbook/digital e-book. Please see my 7th grade science web site for notes, policies, homework, worksheets, web-links and other helpful information.  I believe that this will be an exciting year!  The Mercy Science Blog (mercyscience.blogspot.com ) will document this year's events in science class across the grades.

This is the adventure that is the seventh grade.  As always, I am here to help.  If your student would like individual help with his/her school work, I am available before and after school, as well as at many recesses and flex.  I am almost always here before 7:30 am and do not leave until after 4:00 pm.  Students are free to stop in, or can check with me in advance to avoid any potential conflicts with previously scheduled meetings or conferences.

I look forward to a school year filled with new experiences and adventures as your child  grows in knowledge and faith.

Sincerely,

Mr. Patrick Sharp
